Councilman Balls is actively involved in making a difference in the community. Among the many organizations that he devotes his time to is the Big Brothers Big Sisters organization. He was matched as a Big Brother for the first time in 1990 and now serves on the Board of Directors. In 2012, Councilman Balls received the "Big Brother of the Year" award from the Saginaw County Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Great Lakes Bay Region.
